MSVR Golf GTi Championship:

Donington Park. 3rd April 2011 (Blast in the Park)

First round of the 2011 Golf GTi championship at Donington Park. It was great to be back at Donington after a two year absence. The sweeping curves and undulating landscape is always a pleasure to any race car driver, and the circuits pace is always sure to get the adrenaline flowing.

The team fielded cars for the 2010 champion Simon Hill, championship regular, Matt Weller and for the first time, John Mawdsley. In qualifying the drivers put themselves in 6th, 17th & 10th respectively.

The first race saw John Mawdsley suffering with a failing rear brake compensator, which turned his golf into a drift car. Matt Weller disappointingly suffered from a valve failure which resulted in irreparable engine damage. Simon Hill came home in 5th place. Simon drove a best lap time of 1:26.6 which was consistent with Doningtons previous lap record. However the front running cars were over a second faster which is possibly down to the new circuit layout?

The second race was wet which saw Simon Hill coming home in fourth and John Mawdsley in 10th, from a starting position of 18th.
